For many students applying for spring weeks, internships, and grad schemes, it’s getting to the time of year when they find out if they’ve secured them. Unfortunately, for many students, this will not be the case, and it can be quite frustrating and depressing to put in 3-4 months of work and dozens of hours with no outcome.

But here’s one thing you can do that will help you start making more progress which you’re probably not doing.

So how do you start gathering feedback from your applications and unearthing insights from it?

Break down your job search into different stages and gather info on where you’re falling down across these 3 areas:

  • CV/application stage

  • online assessment

  • interview stage

Then bucket your applications into each stage and work out the % of your applications that are falling at each stage.

From this, you can identify and gain clarity on where you’re struggling and what part of your job search you need to adapt. If you’re failing at the:

  • Application stage - your CV needs to be adapted and further optimised

  • Online assessment - Practice online assessments (e.g. assessment day, graduates first) and learn what they’re looking for

  • Interview - Look at how you’re currently preparing and adapt your approach

By identifying where you’re going wrong, you can then work to mitigate those areas!

So, if you’re currently stuck with applications, apply this framework and find out what’s holding you back!
