We’ve been posting our CV transformations for clients on Tiktok for some time and we regularly get comments like ‘my CV is formatted like this but I don’t get interviews’
and when I offer to have a look at their CV, I see that while they may have the same ‘layout’, the content of their CV is very different.
What many people will do is describe a task or responsibility they’ve done and while it may be relevant and key for the role they’re applying to, it’s not clearly signposting the skills the job role is looking for.
When a recruiter looks at a CV, there are generally 3 to 4 things they are looking for straight away, and one of them is seeing certain skills and keywords relevant to the role. So it’s important that you make it easy for recruiters to validate you by seeing the skills they need.
So how do you make sure you are clearly showing the relevant transferrable skills?
Here are just two minor changes you can make to do this
Firstly, use the actual language of the job description in your bullet points! If you’re applying for a consulting role and they clearly ask for ‘experience leading multi-functional teams’, start your bullet points with ‘Led a team of 6 consultants across a £10m transformation project’.
Secondly, you need to go from a mindset of ‘What tasks/responsibilities did I have or do?’ to ‘What skills did I leverage to complete said tasks/responsibilities?’. This means that you will go from writing descriptive bullet points to ones where you clearly signpost the skills you used in your various tasks, making it clear to the recruiter the skills you will bring.
So key takeaway? Moving forward, make sure your bullet points clearly demonstrate the relevant and transferrable skills and see the difference they will make in your job search!
