You’ve made dozens of applications and are struggling to land any interviews.

You’ve tweaked your CV so many times and taken on board all the CV advice you’ve seen online (even maybe ours) - still no change in results.

The matter of fact is that your CV may not be the issue you’re not landing interviews - it may be your job search strategy.

I’ve spoken to hundreds of students and graduates regarding their job search and one thing that is quite common is that there is no clear strategy to their job search.

Many of you use a scattergun approach of applying to anything and everything

And look, I get it. You’re anxious to get a graduate job and kickstart your journey, so you think applying for everything will help you land the role.

In reality, it’s that scattergun approach that’s holding you back. By applying to 10 different roles, you’ll have to create 10 different versions of your CV and prepare 10 cover letters and types of interviews. This quickly becomes exhausting and will lead to fatigue, which will reduce the quality of all your applications.

Instead, focusing on quality > quantity is the strategy you need to focus on.

This means rather than applying for roles across 5-6 different career paths which are completely different, focus on 2-3 which align with your skillset, interests and long-term goals.

Think about it. Trying to apply for roles in accounting and marketing is unproductive - they’re two completely different industries with different skillsets and personalities, and thus means you’re probably not made for both.

Instead, you can focus on creating 2-3 very strong and tailored CVs and focus on completing qualifications/virtual work experiences/networking/developing skills in these 2-3 roles.

I wrote a newsletter a couple of weeks ago about a client who was able to secure a grad job after 50+ rejections, and the first step we took with them was clarifying their job search strategy to focus on 1-2 roles.

So if you’re currently stuck in your job search and don’t know what to do, start with your strategy.

Identify your skills and actual interests and pick the 2-3 roles that align with them. This will give you the clarity with creating your CV, streamlining your upskilling and refining who you network with.
